RAPE

FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Any woman can be raped, young or old, rich or poor.

  • A rapist is often a friend, relative or acquaintance.

  • Many cases of rape are not reported to the Police.

  • Less than 10% of men charged with rape are punished.

Professionals agree:

• that most rapist are not mentally ill.
• that many rapists have feelings of inadequacy, a dislike for women
and a tendency towards violence.
• that rape is often caused by a man s wish to humiliate or dominate his victim.
• that victims often suffer aftereffects of fear, anger and anxiety as well as
physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, digestive difficulties and even
mental illness

HOW TO HELP PREVENT IT

Although anyone can be raped, you can help prevent it from happening to you:

• Avoid dark places or short cuts when you are alone.
•
Lock your car doors while driving.
•
Look inside your car before entering.
•
Do not take rides from strangers. Accepting a ride from an acquaintance
who has been drinking sometimes dangerous.
•
Do not let a stranger into your home to make a telephone call.
Offer to make the call.
•
Make certain your home has secure locks on the doors and lights at all entrances.
•
When returning home at night always have your keys ready before you reach your door.
•
If you are accosted try to act as if you are calm and unafraid even if you don’t feel that way. This might discourage a would-be assailant.
•
Do not be afraid to scream if you are attacked. Most people are embarrassed to scream, but it is better to be embarrassed than to be raped.

WHAT TO DO REMEMBER

If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of rape:-

• Get medical attention immediately. You could be injured or exposed to VD., AIDS or become pregnant.
•
Don’t bathe or douche until you have seen the doctor.
•

•
Report to Police. You can decide later if you want to prosecute.
